From NY Sun:
It was the very boorishness of the whole spectacle that keeps it relevant four days later, though, and that should genuinely scare Mets fans. The drunkest lout in all of Flushing would doubtless acknowledge that Santana certainly hasn’t done anything to deserve a single catcall, just as what was certainly the drunkest lout on the East Coast a decade ago freely acknowledged to me that he was taunting Piazza essentially to make a man out of him, and not because he was in a batting slump. But an outpouring of even feigned anger toward a pitcher who, his significant talents aside, is basically a living “I’m sorry” present from team management to enraged fans can only be taken as a sign that the mood of the fans is edging near full-fledged disgust. Usually this sort of thing doesn’t matter; the diligence and faith mentioned in baseball contracts extend to an expectation that players will do their best regardless of how fans at the home park behave, and they nearly always do. Members of baseball management, though, have no such clauses in their contracts, and those employed by the Mets in fact have a long history of overreaction to displays of fan apoplexy. (Note which jersey L-Millz is wearing tonight if you don’t believe this is true.) Manager Willie Randolph, perhaps more importantly, has proved, if he has proved anything during his tenure in Queens, that the greater the pressure gets, the worse he runs a game
During an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman last night, David Wright was hit by a pitch from the talk-show host while taking batting practice on 53rd Street. Wright laughed it off, egging Letterman on to ‘Bring the heat.’

ZephyrsThe New Orleans Zephyrs defeated the visiting Iowa Cubs on Tuesday by a score of 2-1. Starting pitcher Ruddy Lugo (2-0) gets the win after allowing one run on four hits in seven innings of play. Reliever Nate Field picked up his third save of the season after no-hitting the I-Cubs in the final inning. The Zephyrs offensive success was spread around, as a different player recorded all of the Zephyrs five hits. Shortstop Anderson Hernandez and left fielder Chris Aguila both drove in runs as well. Iowa starting pitcher Mike Burns (0-2) got the loss after giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits in five innings of play.
B-MetsLost 11-10 last night… Dan Murphy went 3-4, with a HR, 2 doubles, and 3 RBIs… Salomon Manriquez had 4 hits… 4 of the last 5 starting pitchers for the B-Mets haven’t lasted 5 innings…
From BA: Eastern League - Mike Carp, Binghamton
.474 (18-38), 8 R, 2 2B, 0 3B, 4 HR, 13 RBI, 2 BB, 4 SO, 0 SB, .895 SLG
After Binghamton's first five games this season, Carp was hitting a mild .267, with just four hits to his name. That Carp has gotten his average up to .474 is a testament to just how good his last five games have been. On April 8, Carp had his first multi-hit game of the season, hitting a double and a solo home run against Akron. He continued the damage against the Aeros the next day, hitting another homer and two singles. But Carp saved his best performance for the weekend, collecting eight hits, five runs and five RBIs in Saturday and Sunday's wins, also clubbing his fourth home run of the season.

Minor League BiosWilliam Morgan P R R 6-1 205 11-3-85 Lewis & Clark State College
Morgan played shortstop and pitcher for two seasons at Santa Rosa Junior College. The team finished second in the Big 7 Conference last year at 15-9 and was 31-16 overall after winning the conference title as well as the state championship the previous year. Morgan had a stellar last season there and was named the Nor-Cal Pitcher of the Year.
At Lewis and Clark College in Lewiston, Idaho, he racked up 78 strikeouts in 67.2 innings pitched in 2007, holding opposing batters to a .177 average with a 1.46 ERA and only 17 walks. The Mets drafted Morgan in the 12th round of the 2007 draft. He played the 2007 season with Brooklyn, going 3-0, 2.02, 0.84 in 22 relief appearances, 2 saves. He also had 39 Ks in 36.2 IP.
Carlos Muniz CL R R 6-0 180 3-12-81 Long Beach State University
Muniz was drafted by the Mets in the 13th round of the 2003 draft. In 2003, he was tied for 2nd in the NY-Penn league in saves, and 3rd in relief points. In 2006, Muniz was a Florida State League all-star, 2nd in the league (and 6th throughout all of the minors) in saves, 1st in relief points, and 3rd in games finished. In 2007, he played for AA Binghamton (2-4, 2.45, 1.02, in 44 relief appearances, and 23 saves) and was called up to New Orleans during the last 2 weeks of the season (0-0, 0.00 in 3 appearances). In September 2007, Muniz won the Sterling Award, given to the MVP of each team; in this case, the Binghamton Mets.In September 2007, Muniz was assigned to play in the Arizona Winter League (which is always a sign that the organization wants to invest more time and money in you). In December 2007, Jonathan Mayo/MLB.com wrote:Drafted back in 2003, Muniz has always closed games for Mets Minor League teams, with mixed results. In 2006, he saved 31 games for St. Lucie but was a little old for the level. He made up for that this past season, starting the year in Double-A and finishing it in the big leagues. Along the way, he posted a 2.24 ERA and 23 saves to lead the organization in the Minors. Minor League hitters managed just a .198 average against him. He's on the 40-man roster now and has the chance to help out the Mets bullpen in 2008.
Ex-Mets:
The Washington Nationals signed RHP Steve Schmoll
Dustin Martin: .520/.517/.720/1.237
Brian Bannister was named AL Player of the Week. From ‘Hardball Times’:
The Royals' Brian Bannister is off to a tremendous start for the Kansas City Royals. I mentioned him in my last article, saying that not a lot of people thought he could repeat his excellent season last year. The main reason was that he wasn't striking out enough batters compared to the number he walked.
Last year, his ERA checked in at a cool 3.87 but his FIP was a more mediocre 4.52. This is mostly from his K/G being a mere 4.4 and his BB/G of 2.5. Now 2.5 walks per game isn't bad at all, but only 4.4 strikeouts generally is going to lead you into danger. So how has he turned it around this year so far? Well, first he has kept his walk rate at 2.5 BB/G but has upped his strikeouts to 6.5 per game. That is a huge increase and while he probably shouldn't have an ERA under one, his FIP is an excellent 2.59 so far. His microscopic ERA of 0.86 has certainly been helped by a Defensive Efficiency Ratio of .825 behind him and a LOB percentage of 81.2 While both of these numbers will cool off, he still could be one of the better pitchers in the majors if he can keep the strikeouts coming.

1984 In his first three at-bats, A's Dave Kingman hits three home runs, including a grand slam driving in eight runs against the Mariners in a 9-6 victory.
